Discover our 1st MOOC on legal research methodology!

With the University of Luxembourg, we have developed for you this first online course on Legal Research Methodology.
This series of E-Modules covers the foundations of academic legal research and aims to introduce you to legal research methodologies.
Our online course is made of seven e-modules covering :

  • How to design a good legal research (E-Module 1);
  • How to find a reliable sources for your legal research (E-Module 2);
  • Different legal methodologies (E-Module 3);
  • Comparative legal research (E- Module 4);
  • Plagiarism and academic ethics (E-Module 5);
  • Referencing (E-Module 6) ;
  • Scientific legal writing (E-Module 7).

Each E-Module includes a video course, a downloadable presentation and a quiz.
We hope this online course will help you to effectively get started to design and conduct good legal research! To receive your certificate upon the successful completion of this course, please do not forget to register!

E-Module 1: Designing a good legal research

In this module, you will learn how to design a good legal research. The module focuses on scientific research process insisting in particular on the literature review. It gives advice on how to choose a good legal research topic and how to formulate the research question.

E-Module 2: Reliable sources

In this module, you will learn how to find reliable sources for your research. The module focuses on what are primary and secondary sources used in legal research and how to find them. It also gives you tips on how to assess the relevance and reliability of online resources.

E-Module 3: Methodologies in legal research

In this module, you will learn about several research methodologies that can be used in legal research. The module focuses on descriptive, analytical and normative methodologies and gives advice on how to choose the appropriate methodology.

E-Module 4: Comparative legal research

In this module, you will learn what comparative legal research is and what are the aims of comparative law. The module also focuses on the dos and don’ts to conduct comparative legal research.

E-Module 5: Plagiarism and academic ethics

In this module you will learn what plagiarism is and how it is at the core of academic ethics. The lesson focuses looks at the different types of plagiarism and how to avoid it by properly referencing sources.

E-Module 6: Referencing

In this module you will learn about referencing and golden rules on how to appropriately cite your sources when writing in the academic context. The lesson explains why this is important in academia and how to do it correctly.

E-Module 7: Scientific legal writing

In this module you will learn about scientific legal writing. The lesson explains how to structure a law paper, in particular using the IRAC method. The module also focuses on how to write a good introduction and gives you tips  to get started with writing.
